NOTARIAL SERVICES
Alastair Caisley is qualified as a notary as well as being a solicitor and is able to provide notarial services to you.

Who is a notary and what does he do?
A notary is a public official who is legally authorised to affirm the truth of documents and to confirm their authenticity, especially documents that are to be used overseas.

Notaries are widely recognised internationally. Many documents notarised by a notary will need authentication by either the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or the embassy of the country in which the document is to be used ('legalisation'). We can advise you on this and arrange for the appropriate legalisation.

A notary identifies himself on documents by use of his individual seal. Such seals are regarded by most other countries as of great importance for establishing the genuineness of a document. A notary's seal is registered with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and with many foreign embassies and consulates.

Checklist for seeing a notary
Usually the notary will:
 • Need you to bring evidence of identity e.g. a passport
 • Need you to be certain that you understand a document, particularly if it is not in English
 • Need to see any relevant papers or documents

Fees
 • The basic charge is £80 (plus VAT) for simple witnessing of a document.
 • Where additional work is required, such as preparing a certificate or sending a document for legislation at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or an Embassy, this will be charged on a time spent basis.
 • The Foreign and Commonwealth Office currently charge £12 per document and further fees are generally payable to Embassies/Consulates for legalisation.
